An Analysis of Six English Translations of Qur’anic Proper Nouns in Ligh of Chesterman’s Translation Strategies | ||

| The current study aimed to investigate the strategies used in the translation of Qur’anic proper names based on Chesterman’s (1997) model. To this end, using a purposive sampling, 100 proper nouns in Arabic were collected to determine the frequency and percentage of the strategies used in the six English translations. Chesterman’s (1997) model was chosen as the theoretical model and six English renditions of the Holy Qur’an by Yusuf Ali (1934), Pickthall (1930), Saffarzadeh (2001), Arberry (1973), Qarai (2003) and Shakir (1993) were considered. After spotting all proper names, the translational strategies used by different translators were coded and compared. The results illustrated that all translators employed three strategies of loan translation, paraphrase, and synonymy with different frequencies. Furthermore, loan translation was used more frequently by all translators while paraphrase proved to be the least frequently-used strategy by all translators except Saffarzadeh and Shakir. That is, while the former used both paraphrase and synonymy equally, the latter employed more paraphrase than synonymy. In summary, all six translators employed only three of the whole strategies introduced by Chesterman’s (1997) model. Also, while loan translation was the most frequently used strategy in translation, synonymy and paraphrase were found to rank as the second and the third strategies used by all translators except Saffarzadeh and Shakir. | ||
