چکیده | ||
Situational context is one of the key notions in translation studies. Since a text is a form of communication that takes place between particular participants in a particular time and place, finding an equivalent meaning is in fact finding an equivalence of situational context. As a sacred text, the Holy Qur’an has its own specific situational context in which it was revealed and narrated in the form of Asbab Al-Nuzul i.e. the occasion of revelation narrations. Lack of understanding the situational context in some verses may cause some difficulties for both translators and readers to comprehend the meaning of the Qur’an. Therefore, it seems necessary in some cases to make the context explicit in translation. This research as a descriptive and qualitative one aimed at investigating the function of explicating situational context on the quality of English Qur’an translations. Accordingly, four Shia translations including Nasr, Shakir, Saffarzadeh, and Mir’s translations were chosen to be examined due to having common exegetical sources. Kinga Klaudy’s explicitation typology (2008) was also implemented in order to establish the basis of classifying explicitation types. By analyzing 100 verses randomly, it was revealed that explicating the situational context, and more specifically the occasion of revelation, has occurred in the work of four translators. Pragmatic explicitation was identified as the only observable and the most frequent type of explicitation. Through the comparative analysis and discussions provided in this study, it was concluded that explicating situational context leads to a more proper understanding of the Quran’s meaning. | ||
