| According to the principles of Islamic governance and the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the institution of the Guardianship of the Jurist (wilāyat al-faqīh) is not considered a separate branch alongside the executive, legislative, and judicial powers. Rather, these branches operate under the supervision and guidance of the Supreme Leader, who serves as the highest authority in the political system. While the three branches maintain relative independence, their coherence and legitimacy derive from the leadership of the Jurist Guardian, who ensures unity and macro-level direction. This article analyzes the political structure of the Islamic Republic through the dual lens of mechanical and organic systems. A mechanical system is characterized by centralization, stability, and a formal structure optimized for consistent control and execution. In contrast, an organic system resembles a living organism—dynamic, flexible, and responsive to change. The Guardianship of the Jurist, as the central axis of governance, has raised debate over whether the Islamic Republic functions more like a rigid mechanical model or an adaptive organic one. This paper argues that the system is a hybrid, drawing on the strengths of both. It combines the stability and order of a mechanical framework with the adaptability and responsiveness of an organic structure. Through this hybrid model, the theory of wilāyat al-faqīh enables the Islamic Republic to uphold its ideological foundations while maintaining flexibility to meet the evolving needs of Islamic society. | ||
