| The issue of the creation or eternity of the soul is one of the most complex dilemmas in Islamic philosophy, that preferring either side presents a serious challenge. Followers of the eternity faced significant difficulties in issues such as the soul's attachment to body and the cessation of the soul before body's creation. On the other hand, the believers in creation encountered another dilemma in explaining the immortality of a created soul with body after death, regarding their assumptions. In confronting the challenging issue of the creation or eternity, Sadra initially aims to understand and report on the multifaceted views of various, sometimes conflicting, predecessors. He also examines the challenges that earlier thinkers posed to each other's theories and the raised criticisms. He then distinguishes the defensible elements of these views from the indefensibles within the context of the foundations and principles of each theory. Subsequently, he attempts to bring together the indefensible aspects in a coherent and systematic manner, utilizing various philosophical, mystical, and religious foundations to achieve a comprehensive and new perspective on the creation of the soul. This view tries to be free from the theoretical gaps of the proponents of creation while not conflicting with Platonic views on the eternity of the soul or with religious sources regarding the pre-existence of the soul and its descent. Such multiple levels, Sadra’s emphasis on not limiting the approach to reason and philosophy, methodological pluralism without falling into eclecticism, aligns with the interdisciplinary studies approach with an integrative model. | ||
