| چکیده | ||

| چکیده [English] | ||
| The Holy Quran, as a foundational source for understanding humanity, has always held a central position in Islamic anthropology. Muslim exegetes and researchers have relied on its verses to explain the nature, existential structure, innate disposition, felicity, and wretchedness of human beings. One of the significant expressions in this field is the phrase “nuṭfa amshāj” in the second verse of Surah al-Insan (Human). The main issue of this research is to determine precisely what this Quranic expression refers to regarding the characteristics of the human sperm-drop and its primordial origin, and what is meant by the subsequent term “nabtalīh” (We test him). Since various opinions have been expressed among exegetes regarding the meaning of this phrase, the present study, with special focus on the exegesis of Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini Beheshti, seeks to review different views and offer a more precise and coherent understanding of this verse. The importance of this issue lies in the fact that understanding “nuṭfa amshāj” is not merely a lexical or exegetical discussion, but is directly linked to the Quran’s image of human identity, his fitrah (innate nature), freedom of choice, and the foundation of the divine test. The objective of this research is to explain the meaning of “nuṭfa amshāj” in light of Quranic verses, to analyze and evaluate the view of Ayatollah Beheshti, and ultimately to arrive at the preferred and strongest opinion on the subject. The author aims to show that this Quranic expression, unlike some materialistic or purely physical interpretations, carries a profound implication about the inner structure of the human being and can play a role in a more comprehensive understanding of Quranic anthropology. From this perspective, the study is not merely seeking to translate or explain a word, but to uncover a layer of meaning related to human nature, the origin of his trial, and the relationship between opposing inclinations within him. The main question of the article is: What is the meaning of “nuṭfa amshāj” and what is the relationship between “nabtalīh” and it in the continuation of the verse? In other words, should this expression be interpreted as referring to the material characteristics of the sperm-drop — such as the mixing of elements or the combination of male and female gametes — or does it possess a deeper, more anthropological meaning? By raising this question, the article essentially seeks to answer whether, from the Quranic viewpoint, human beings are inherently pure-natured or inherently evil, or whether their fitrah is a mixture of good and evil and a ground for free will and testing. This question forms the central axis of the article’s exegetical and anthropological discussion. The research method employed in this article is a comprehensive-ijtihadi approach combined with a descriptive-analytical method. Drawing upon the three primary sources of Islamic knowledge — the Quran, Tradition (Sunnah), and reason — the author has first collected and analyzed the various opinions of exegetes concerning “nuṭfa amshāj.” He then examined Beheshti’s viewpoint by referring to Quranic evidence and the contextual flow of the verses. In this process, other related verses, especially verses 7 to 10 of Surah al-Shams (The Sun), have been considered as supporting interpretive evidence. The article’s method is not merely descriptive but is based on comparison, evaluation, and judgment among existing views so that, in the end, the interpretation that is strongest in terms of meaning, context, and Quranic consistency is highlighted. The important findings of the research indicate that “nuṭfa amshāj” in this verse refers to an innate nature (fiṭra) mixed with inclinations toward both good and evil, and not merely a sperm-drop in its physical or biological aspect. Accordingly, the verse points to an internal contradiction in the human being — a contradiction in which a person possesses both the capacity for good and the potential for evil. This very mixture makes him worthy of trial and responsibility. Within this framework, “nabtalīh” means testing the human being in the field of these opposing attractions; that is, God creates man in a situation where he can choose his own path between good and evil inclinations. The article demonstrates that this meaning is fully consistent with the verses of Surah al-Shams, especially those concerning the inspiration of evil and piety. Furthermore, the examination of interpretations shows that Ayatollah Beheshti also adopted this reading and interpreted the verse based on the dual and inner identity of the human being. Therefore, his interpretation is presented as more precise and profound compared to materialistic or purely physical understandings. The final conclusion of the article is that “nuṭfa amshāj” refers to the dark and bright, good and evil, and mixed inner identity of the human being. Thus, man is neither inherently evil nor inherently pure-natured, but a being composed of opposing inclinations who, through free will, can move toward good or evil. This understanding is consistent with both the context of the verse and the broader context of the Quran, and aligns with the precision of Quranic vocabulary, since the qualifier “amshāj” (mingled) cannot be merely a material description unrelated to the verse’s theme. Accordingly, the opening verses of Surah al-Insan seek to express human identity, his freedom of choice, and the foundation of his trial. In this view, the human being is a conscious and choosing entity who, in the field of his conflicting inclinations, selects the path of felicity or wretchedness. Therefore, Beheshti’s view — which interprets “nuṭfa amshāj” as a fiṭra mixed with good and evil — is, from both semantic and Quranic perspectives, a stronger and more acceptable interpretation. | ||
