| چکیده | ||

| چکیده [English] | ||
| Justice is a fundamental principle organizing individual, social, and political life in Islamic thought and occupies a central place in the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). Within this intellectual framework, justice is not merely an individual moral virtue or an instrument for regulating social relations; it is also an essential pillar of good governance and a key criterion for evaluating rulers’ performance. Qur’anic verses, including “Indeed, Allah commands justice and excellence” (Qur’an, 16:90) and “Say, ‘My Lord has commanded justice’” (Qur’an, 7:29), emphasize the foundational status of justice. Similarly, the Alid tradition presents justice as a foundation of social stability and a source of rulers’ beauty and perfection. Despite extensive scholarship on justice in Islamic political thought, much of the existing research has focused on its conceptual and philosophical foundations or its social, economic, legal, and institutional consequences. By contrast, the direct implications of practicing justice for rulers themselves, particularly its effects on their character, status, authority, decision-making, and spiritual standing, have received comparatively little systematic attention as a distinct subject of inquiry. Accordingly, this study asks: What implications does justice orientation have for rulers in Islamic governance, and how can these implications be conceptualized within a coherent framework? The primary objective of this study is to identify and categorize the governance implications of justice orientation in Islamic governance through an analysis of authoritative Islamic religious texts. Here, “governance implications” refers to the consequences of rulers’ practice of justice for their character, status, authority, and quality of governance, whether arising directly or through ethical, social, and spiritual mechanisms. The study thus seeks to demonstrate that justice orientation extends beyond improving relations between rulers and society: it can contribute to rulers’ personal and moral development, strengthen their political position and authority, and enhance their spiritual and eschatological standing. A secondary objective is to develop a three-dimensional model of these implications that provides a theoretical basis for designing context-specific indicators for evaluating just governance.This qualitative study employs thematic analysis. The textual corpus comprises the Qur’an, Nahj al-Balagha, and selected authoritative Islamic hadith sources. Texts were selected through purposive sampling based on themes such as justice, equity, rulers, authority, governance, and governmental virtues. The analysis began with repeated, in-depth readings of the selected texts and the extraction of statements concerning the practice of justice in governance. These statements were assigned initial codes, with each statement addressing the consequences of justice for rulers treated as a unit of meaning. Similar codes were then compared, merged, and refined to develop subthemes and overarching themes. The resulting themes were organized into three principal dimensions—personal–ethical, political–social, and spiritual–eschatological—and interpreted within an integrated conceptual framework. To enhance analytical credibility, themes drawn from different religious sources were compared to identify convergences and differences in meaning. The findings indicate that the governance implications of justice orientation can be understood through three interconnected dimensions. First, in the personal–ethical dimension, rulers’ practice of justice is associated with a range of consequences for their inner lives and character. One such consequence is “inner vitality and joy,” expressed in the Alid tradition as “the delight of the eyes of rulers” and linked to the establishment of justice throughout the land and the emergence of affection among the people. Justice is also described as the “beauty of rulers” and the “ornament of kings,” linking it to rulers’ moral refinement and spiritual beauty. Furthermore, justice orientation is presented as conducive to rulers’ existential perfection, the balance of their moral faculties, elevated status, the dignity of their supporters, and the attainment of virtue and excellence. These findings suggest that justice at the personal level is not merely an outward form of conduct; within the conceptual framework of Islamic texts, it can also be understood as a process of purification, development, and moral and existential elevation. Second, in the political–social dimension, justice orientation is associated with reduced dependence on assistants and informal power networks, fewer opportunities for opponents to exert influence, protection against certain governance errors and lapses, stronger managerial authority, more effective implementation of commands, and greater political and administrative autonomy. Themes derived from Alid traditions suggest that rulers who uphold justice within their territories become less dependent on informal power networks and intermediary groups. Justice can also strengthen rulers’ positions by fostering public trust, reducing the social sources of dissatisfaction, and broadening the government’s base of social support. At the managerial level, justice is associated with administrative integrity, transparency, accountability, and improved access to information about society, potentially enabling more balanced decision-making and reducing certain strategic errors. In this dimension, therefore, justice is not merely a moral value but also a principle structuring the relationship among rulers, society, and power structures. Third, in the spiritual–eschatological dimension, justice orientation is associated with sacred consequences that extend beyond worldly interests. Answered prayers, eschatological reward, divine favor and honor, and the extension of divine mercy are among the principal themes identified in this domain. Islamic traditions include the “just imam” among those whose prayers are answered. Qur’anic verses and hadiths likewise associate the practice of justice with inclusion among the “equitable” (muqsitin) and the attainment of divine love. The Alid tradition also links rulers’ practice of justice to the extension of divine mercy. These findings indicate that, within the religious framework, the consequences of just governance extend beyond the political and social spheres to encompass rulers’ relationships with God and their eschatological destiny. Taken together, the themes indicate that the personal–ethical, political–social, and spiritual–eschatological dimensions are intrinsically interconnected rather than entirely independent. By shaping rulers’ character and conduct, the practice of justice fosters moral refinement, inner tranquility, and existential growth. This personal transformation can, in turn, influence the quality of their political decisions and actions. At the social level, the trust and legitimacy generated by justice can strengthen rulers’ autonomy and managerial authority. At the spiritual level, commitment to justice connects rulers to concepts such as proximity to God, answered prayers, divine mercy, and eschatological reward. Justice orientation in Islamic governance can therefore be understood as a multilayered mechanism linking ethics, politics, and spirituality. The study concludes that justice in the Islamic model of governance is not merely a rule regulating governmental conduct toward society; it also has far-reaching implications for rulers as individuals. The resulting three-dimensional framework indicates that justice orientation can simultaneously contribute to rulers’ personal and moral development, strengthen their political autonomy and authority, and enhance their spiritual and eschatological standing. By focusing on the “governance implications of justice orientation,” this study addresses a gap in the literature on Islamic governance and provides a conceptual basis for examining rulers as individuals directly affected by the practice of justice. The framework may also inform future research on context-specific indicators for evaluating just governance, the relationship between ethics and power, and the personal, political, and spiritual dimensions of rulers in political systems influenced by the Islamic tradition. | ||
