| چکیده | ||

| چکیده [English] | ||
| Edited volumes account for a major share of global scholarly publishing. They provide a distinctive framework for organizing knowledge, operating quite differently from traditional monographs and textbooks. By tracing the historical trajectory of the academic press from the seventeenth century to the present, this paper examines the structural, functional, and epistemological status of these collections. On the one hand, monographs typically demand a linear, single-author narrative. In contrast, edited collections rely on the editor’s curatorial vision to approach a topic from highly specialized and varied angles. This study categorizes six established variants of these works within the international publishing landscape. Namely, handbooks map the most recent research landscape in a given field, while companions act as step-by-step guides for basic instruction. Readers are assembled to compile classic texts and essential course materials, while anthologies curate selected writings to help establish a literary or intellectual canon. Finally, Festschriften form records mapping a prominent scholar’s intellectual network, and proceedings capture original, early-stage research generated at academic symposia. Ultimately, the survey demonstrates that despite their structural diversity and occasional overlap, these volumes remain indispensable. By institutionalizing collaboration and formalizing research networks, they sustain the structural vitality and plurality necessary for scientific communication to survive. | ||
