| چکیده | ||

| چکیده [English] | ||
| This article examines the factors and contexts that led 16th–17th century Sufi scholar ‘Abd al-Ḥaqq al-Dehlawī (d. 1642) to transition from the traditional Sufi path (ṭarīqah) to active political engagement, and assesses the subsequent impact of this transition on the Indian subcontinent. Traditional Sufism in India had generally maintained a strict separation between spiritual-moral hierarchy and political-social order, viewing worldly power as antithetical to the Sufi vocation. Dehlawī, however, disrupted this formulation by theorising politics and involving himself directly in political critique and reform. The research adopts a fundamental, textually based approach within the framework of political thought, applying Stewart Hughes’ method of intellectual history across three stages: context (genesis), activities (process), and consequences (outcome). Data collection relies on documentary and library sources, with primary attention to Dehlawī’s own writings and secondary references for historical background. Dehlawī was born in Delhi in 958 AH (1551 CE) and died in 1052 AH (1642 CE). He received his early education from his father and later from various scholars and Sufis in the subcontinent and the Hejaz. Although he was devoted to the Qādirī order for spiritual matters, he gravitated toward the Naqshbandī order for political conduct, especially under the influence of Khwāja Muḥammad Bāqī Billāh. His intellectual maturity coincided with the latter half of Akbar’s fifty year reign (1556–1605), a period marked by profound religious and political deviations after Akbar’s initial twenty years as a pious Sunni ruler. Three major contexts prompted Dehlawī’s entry into the political sphere. First, the Infallibility Decree (Maḥẓar) of 1579, which transferred the ultimate authority of religious interpretation and ijtihād from the ‘ulamā’ to the emperor, effectively granting Akbar the status of “Just Imam” and enabling his religious autocracy. Second, the promotion of nationalism, aimed at unifying Hindus and Muslims, which led to extreme measures such as banning cow slaughter and permitting pork and wine. Third, the project of divine religion (Dīn-i Ilāhī) – a syncretic blend of Islam, Hinduism and Zoroastrianism – through which Akbar declared the prophecy of Muḥammad abrogated and presented himself as the leader of a new faith. Dehlawī, who had been in the Hejaz during the early implementation of these policies, returned to India in 1000 AH (1592 CE) at his teacher’s insistence and confronted a society corrupted by these deviations. Dehlawī’s political activities were fundamentally critical reformist and cautious in nature. He avoided direct confrontation with Akbar due to the emperor’s violent treatment of non court scholars and his own prudent disposition. After Akbar’s death, under Emperor Jahāngīr, Dehlawī heeded the advice of his Naqshbandī mentor to influence rulers rather than avoid them. He began with mirror for princes literature, composing three major epistles: Tanbīh al Ghāfilīn (warning the heedless about the transience of worldly power), Risāla Nūriyya Sultāniyya (a detailed exposition of his politico religious thought), and Tarjumat al Aḥādīth al Arba‘īn (forty hadiths advising kings). These works combated tyranny, defended justice, and articulated the unity of religion and politics, which Dehlawī famously described as “twins” – any deficiency in one inevitably harms the other. Regarding justice, Dehlawī considered it the supreme pillar of sovereignty, superior even to military strength and treasury. He argued that unity in justice, based on Qur’anic principles, guarantees the stability of the state. Injustice and oppression, rooted in the ruler’s negligence and corrupt officials, lead inevitably to collapse. He also rejected the discourse of separating religion from politics, asserting that in a deeply religious society, marginalising faith weakens political legitimacy and leads to disintegration. The consequences of Dehlawī’s reformist movement were profound and long lasting. First, after Akbar’s death, Jahāngīr abrogated many of his father’s laws: prostration before the king was banned, cow slaughter was re permitted, destroyed mosques were rebuilt, and all laws contradicting Islamic sharī‘a were nullified. Second, his teachings influenced subsequent Mughal rulers through Shāh Jahān and especially Aurangzeb (r. 1069 AH/1658 CE). Unlike Akbar, Aurangzeb became a strict religious monarch who enforced the jizya on Hindus, removed them from high offices, banned alcohol, and suppressed syncretic practices. Third, Dehlawī’s ideas helped shape an anti colonial discourse that emerged under Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb’s military confrontation with the English East India Company in 1685 CE – which repelled British attacks on Bengal and Surat – marked the first significant Muslim resistance to European imperialism in the subcontinent. This discourse of political religious revival against colonialism can be traced back to Dehlawī’s counsel to Shāh Jahān and through him to Aurangzeb. In conclusion, Abdul Haq Dehlawi transformed traditional Sufi quietism and predestinarianism into political activism and pragmatism. While earlier Sufis concerned themselves only with individual spiritual salvation, Dehlawī pursued collective redemption through reform. His critical reformist movement remained gentle and non confrontational – he never directly opposed the sultan but used advisory treatises to guide rulers from outside the court. Nevertheless, by redefining the relationship between religion and politics, he fundamentally reshaped the political and religious landscape of the Indian subcontinent for centuries. | ||
